Study financial education, compete for a $5,000 college scholarship

Calling all parents and caregivers! [Treasurer’s Office] is proud to sponsor The Treasurer’s Summer Challenge, a first-of-its-kind nationwide financial literacy challenge for high school students. This year’s virtual challenge will take place during the month of July, and we want YOU to participate!

We are committed to helping our [employees/associates] and their families plan for their financial future and find ways to pay for college. The Treasurer’s Summer Challenge provides an opportunity for students to have some fun and learn critical financial concepts — all from the comfort of home while social distancing!

The one-month challenge was created by social impact education innovator EVERFI, our partner in financial education. Each lesson covers important financial topics covering everything from savings, investing, income, debt and more. After completing the five lessons, students submit a short capstone essay in which they share their plans after high school and outline a plan for how to get there. The student with the winning essay will receive a $5,000 college scholarship.

Talking Points

  • The Treasurer’s Summer Challenge is a nationwide financial literacy initiative for high school students that will run for the month of July.
  • Sponsored by State Treasurer’s Offices for the students in their communities, the challenge is made up of a 5-part course and an essay contest, where students compete to win a $5,000 college scholarship.
  • This initiative enables financial institutions to connect with their community and provide critical financial education to students social distancing at home in a fun and engaging way.
  • Only 50% of parents are saving for college, and less than 30% of those savings are in tax-advantaged 529 accounts.
  • Education leaders are already bracing for a worse “summer slide” this year for students whose schools were shut down to curb the spread of coronavirus. But new research from NWEA suggests the “COVID slide” is going to be significantly worse, with projections suggesting major academic impacts from COVID closures for students, especially in mathematics
  • This digital challenge offers our communities a fun, engaging learning solution.
  • The digital challenge is broken down into five lessons on foundational personal finance topics including: spending and saving; credit and debt; employment and income; investing; and risk and insurance.
  • Students have the opportunity to submit a capstone essay to showcase and apply what they learned through the challenge. The essay prompt is: What are you inspired to do after high school? How will the lessons you learned from the Treasurer’s Summer Challenge help you turn your inspirations into a reality?
  •  Learners will gain skills to create an individual financial decision-making framework, which they can apply to their lives now and in the future.
  • Students will access the course through your institution’s custom-branded landing page that EVERFI will build from you. You can promote the landing page in your social media, email, and website channels.

The Treasurer’s Summer Challenge course is open from July 1-July 31.

  • EVERFI will be responsible for running the contest, which includes creating the essay prompt and rubric, running the submission process, choosing the scholarship vehicle, and managing the award process.  We will award the scholarship in August.
